‘Avoid Non – Essential Travels’ – Security Expert Advises PCMs, During Sensitization on Personal Security Consciousness

Prospective Corps Members of the 2022 Batch C, Stream 2 Orientation Course deployed to Ogun State have been advised to ensure avoidance of travel plans that are not essential or necessary to prevent unexpected security issues.

The PCMs got this admonition during a security sensitization which is a crucial part of the Orientation by Capt Olusesan Oye, Rtd at the Multipurpose Hall of the Sagamu Orientation Camp marking the commencement of lecture series for the Batch.

He noted that it is a very wrong idea to travel too early in the morning before the hours of 5 o’clock and travelling late in the evening.

Capt. Olusesan maintained that the security situation of the country is very alarming, adding that security management have become very complex especially in the northern region of the country.

The security expert further noted that all individuals including Corps Members and the entire citizenry is vulnerable and should hence take charge of the vital responsibility to contribute to minimizing the security crisis in the country.

“The security situations in our country have put Nigerians at risk. Security management is getting more complex and states in the northern part of the country are really affected.

“We are all vulnerable and have an important role to play in securing ourselves and our workplace. Our contribution to reducing insecurity will contribute to our survival and the survival of the country entirely.” He said.

He further stressed that Corps Members should be conversant with the security condition of their workplace and be observant of things around them. He describes cyber criminality as the rave of the moment as he enjoined that everyone keep their pin and password private.

“Be conversant with security policy of your workplace, develop confidence in checking people, be observant, try and establishment channel of communication with fellow employees.

“In the night, check who is knocking before opening. Ensure all external doors are secured through curtails and windows. It is the ember period when insecurity is prone.

“Avoid a regular route. Avoid narrow street, avoid flashpoint areas, redlight, Do not share information about your lost key before you replace it.

“When on foot, be prepared to cross the road quickly if a stranger calls or you hear footstep around you. When you’re on commercial bike, let your bag be between you and the Bikeman.

If attacked with ammunition, kindly release your money, and save your life, you will make more money if you’re alive. If going out at night, have a plan to come back. Do not take anything strange at events.” He noted.

Speaking about SERVICOM, Mrs. Oluranti Oni Joseph describes youth Corps Members as veritable agents of national development in Nigeria adding that SERVICOM established in March, 2004, under the leadership of former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is designed to deliver services entitled to the citizens.

The Gender Desk Officer, Mr. Yemisi Disu added that NYSC is not gender – based while he boosts the confidence of female Corps Members to take leadership positions wherever they found themselves.
