Poly’Ibadan authorities express concern, Appeal for Delay in Indefinite Strike Amid Staff Unions’ Demands
The authorities of The Polytechnic Ibadan have responded to the indefinite strike initiated by the institution’s staff unions.
Recall that it was reported that approximately 15 staff unions in Oyo State, under the Joint Action Committee (JAC), began an indefinite strike on March 10, 2025, across five state-owned institutions to press their demands on the government.
The Institutions affected include The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oke-Ogun Polytechnic in Saki, Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic in Eruwa, Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology in Igboora, and Oyo State College of Education in Lanlate.
In response, Alh. Soladoye Adewole, the Public Relations Officer of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, issued a statement exclusively to Naija Metro News revealed to NAIJALORD MEDIA. He revealed that the institution’s authorities have urged union leaders to reconsider their strike and give room for more time for dialogue.
The statement reads:
“The authorities of tertiary Institutions in Oyo State have appealed to the leadership of the unions to suspend the planned strike action set to begin today, Monday, March 10, 2025, over the minimum wage issue.
“On Sunday, March 9, 2025, the Rectors of The Polytechnic Ibadan, Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa, Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki, Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora, and Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate, convened an emergency meeting with representatives from the leadership of the industrial unions under the Joint Action Committee (JAC). During this meeting, they appealed for more time for negotiations and consultations before any strike action is taken.
“The authorities emphasized that a strike at this time would be ill-timed and would disrupt academic activities across the institutions, as well as the ongoing consultation and negotiation efforts. They further highlighted the negative impact such a strike would have on students and the surrounding communities where the institutions are located.
“TPL Dr. Kola Lawal, the Chairman of the Joint Action Committee of Industrial Unions in the tertiary institutions, assured the authorities that, as union representatives, they would convene an online meeting with their executives and members to discuss the appeal made by the institutions’ authorities.”
